GPS and Battery Management on Long Rides

Your phone is the most important piece of gear on a ForgedRider GPS-verified ride challenge. Nothing else
competes, not your gloves, not your tank bag, not your backup tools. If the phone dies, the verification
dies.
Most riders underestimate how fast a phone drains under heavy use. Twelve hours of GPS tracking, screen on,
and camera use will kill most phones twice over without external power. Battery management is not optional
on a ForgedRider ride challenge; it's a planned part of the system.
What drains a phone on a long ride
Several things at once:
- GPS active. Continuous location tracking is the single biggest battery drain.
- Screen on or wakelock. ForgedRider keeps the screen awake for tracking, which means the
screen is on for hours.
- Cellular searching. In remote areas, the phone hunts harder for signal, which uses
extra battery.
- Camera usage. Each photo is a brief but significant drain.
- Cold weather. Lithium batteries lose effective capacity below about 5°C / 41°F.
A phone that lasts 8 hours at 25°C / 77°F might last 5 hours at 0°C / 32°F.
A phone running ForgedRider in tracking mode pulls 15-25% battery per hour of riding. Without external power,
you'll be dead by hour 5 or 6 on a fresh start.
The setup that actually works
The reliable setup for a ride challenge phone:
- Phone mounted to the bike. A solid quad-lock or RAM mount on the handlebars or
windshield. Not a tank bag pocket, you need to see it.
- Charging cable to a 12V outlet on the bike. Most modern bikes have one; if yours
doesn't, a $30 12V outlet kit takes 20 minutes to install.
- Backup battery pack. A 10,000 mAh power bank in your bag, with cable. If the bike's
outlet fails, you have a backup.
- A spare charging cable. Cables fail more often than you think. A spare costs $5 and
saves a ride.
That's the full system. Three things: hard mount, hard-wired charging, backup pack. Each has a failure mode
the others can cover.
Why hard-mounting matters more than you think
A phone bouncing loose in a tank bag is fine on smooth roads. On rough roads, it does two things:
- The phone vibrates against itself, accelerating wear on connectors and buttons.
- The GPS antenna is partially shielded by metal, plastic, or fabric, degrading accuracy.
A hard mount keeps the phone visible, charging, and getting clean GPS sky view. It also lets you take a quick
photo without digging it out of a bag, useful when documenting a fuel stop in 30 seconds.
Power-saving settings that don't break verification
Some settings reduce battery drain without affecting verification:
- Auto-brightness off, brightness manually set to medium. Auto-brightness uses more
battery cycling than steady mid-brightness.
- Background app refresh disabled for non-essential apps. Keep ForgedRider, other
navigation apps, and your
weather app active; turn off social media and email.
- Bluetooth on (for headset use), Wi-Fi off. Wi-Fi searches in motion drain battery
without finding stable connections.
- Airplane mode is NOT an option. ForgedRider needs cellular for some features, and you
need texts for emergencies.
These tweaks add 1-2 hours of effective battery life across a ride challenge. Not transformative on their
own;
useful as part of the system.
The "low battery at hour 8" recovery
If you find your phone is at 30% with hours of riding left, three options:
- Plug it into your backup pack at the next fuel stop. Twenty minutes plugged in restores
40-50%, enough for several more hours.
- Turn the screen off when not actively using it. ForgedRider keeps tracking with the
screen off. The screen is the biggest visible drain.
- Reduce photo-taking. Required photos (start, finish) are non-negotiable. Skip mid-ride
photos if battery is critical.
The key is to notice the battery situation early enough to act. Check at every fuel stop. If trends are bad,
course-correct then, not at hour 12 when the phone dies.
What a dead phone costs
A dead phone mid-ride costs you the certification. Without GPS data, the verification system can't certify
the route.
Even if you make it back to the start, no GPS track means manual review at best, rejection at worst.
Beyond verification, a dead phone in remote areas is a safety problem, no calls in an emergency, no GPS for
navigation, no weather radar for that storm building on the horizon.
The cost of a $30 12V outlet kit and a $40 backup battery is low compared to the cost of a failed
verification or a stranded rider. This is the cheapest reliability upgrade you can make.
A simple pre-ride checklist
Before every long ride:
- Phone charged to 100% the day of the ride challenge
- Cable plugged in to bike's outlet, working
- Backup battery charged, in a bag
- Spare cable in a bag
- Mount tightened, phone secure
- Brightness set to medium or use dark mode
- Background app refresh off
