You cannot carry a full workshop on a motorcycle. You can carry enough to handle the failures that actually occur on long rides. A good tool kit is small, focused, and matched to the problems you are most likely to meet.
The mechanical issues that stop endurance rides are usually ordinary:
You rarely need major engine work on the roadside. You almost always need to deal with a flat or a loose bolt.
These items belong on every endurance ride:
The entire kit weighs under 2 lbs / 1 kg and fits in a tank or saddlebag pocket.
Tailor the kit to your machine:
Choose any extras based on your bike, try to keep weight down.
The opposite mistake is carrying tools you will never use. Ask yourself a simple test: have I needed something like this for a roadside repair in the last five years? If the answer is no, leave it behind.
Keep weight low and centred. Use a tool tube on the frame, or in a tank or saddlebag pocket. Avoid adding a lot of weight in high-mounted top cases. Store tools in a roll or pouch so they do not rattle and are easy to find when you need them at night in the rain.
The single most useful item is often a good light source. Whether it is a headlamp or a flashlight, make sure you can see clearly when a repair happens after dark.
